Overall Impression: “Lori Cole & Company have recorded the classic tune Here's That Rainy Day. While much of Lori Cole's recent releases have been with an orchestra, listeners will surely be drawn to the intimate subtlety of her work with piano accompaniment. In these bare bones performances, Cole's voice is given undivided attention. The charm, wit, and magic of the music comes out and shows its power to move. Lori Cole again sings with strong attention to detail and a gorgeous tone. She is paired with a fine pianist who confidently displays their prowess with a solo break, delighting in its phrasing and excitement. With Here's That Rainy Day in her setlist, Lori Cole is sure to gain new fans while keeping her present following on the edge of their seats. “

Strongest Point(s): “Many of these reviews often point to the work of the performers, and rightly so. But it does feel necessary to commend Johnny Burke on his original lyrics for this song. While slightly morose, they have a witty hindsight that puts a smile on this reviewer's face. But if the lyrics do not entertain listeners, Lori Cole's singing surely will.”

Since I Fell for You.

This song was taken from the “Never Too Late” CD.

Overall Impression:
”With Lori Cole's thoroughly captivating vocal talents and Bobby Schiff highly articulate piano accompaniment providing the strong harmonic backbone, this excellent cover of the Lenny Welch classic "Since I Fell For You" has been both respectfully tributed and passionately conveyed. Lori and Company have managed to effortlessly capture the subtle nuances of the original whilst equally managing to incorporate their own unique musical voices into the track, resulting in a highly accomplished pair of performances that not only complement one another marvelously but ensure the magic of the original is respectfully retained and expressed. Marvelous!”

”Any track that purely focuses on the relationship and interplay between a single vocal part and one other solo instrument will always be prone to heightened scrutiny due to the fact that the stripped back instrumentation doesn't leave much room for error, however, the musicianship on display by Lori and company is exemplary. As a listener, you can really feel a sense of chemistry between the two artists that not only strengthens the song's already stellar songwriting but ensures the performance has this wonderful free-flowing and organic nature to it that gently carries the listener from start to finish. Lori displays superb control over her voice, allowing for a great amount of personality to come through whilst the delicate touch really helps to embellish Lori's deeply nuanced vocal qualities, all these elements combine to create a brilliantly endearing performance that kept me thoroughly invested throughout.”

The following are Reviews of the rest of the songs on the “Never Too Late CD”.

Song: I See Your Face Before Me

Overall Impression: “Gorgeous woodwinds and brass set the stage for I See Your Face Before Me. With the winds calling to the strings, listeners may first expect to hear an inquisitive work for orchestra, but are soon eased with the voice of Lori Cole. Composed by Arthur Schwartz, I See Your Face Before Me is a magical tune with haunting, yet loving lyrics. Lori Cole interprets the work with a sweet consistency that avoids the chilliness the work allows for. This is a smart choice, as the orchestra can add those twists and turns hidden in the music. Many of Lori Cole's recent releases have been with orchestra, or with simple piano accompaniment. I See Your Face Before Me brings in a rhythm section in addition to the orchestra, and demonstrates the power of such a decision. Overall, I See Your Face Before Me is one of Lori Cole's finest recent releases. It is enjoyable and moving from beginning to end.”

Strongest Point(s): “There are many strong points with Lori Cole & Bobby Schiff’s version of I See Your Face Before Me. What stands out immediately, and carries through the entire tune, is the orchestra. There is so much color, and the musicians do a fine job of stepping out when needed. Although I was expecting more movement out of the guitar solo, it was very cool to hear it work in tandem with the piano for a more chordal approach.”

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Cabaret, Standards & Classics, Broadway, and strong female singers will enjoy I See Your Face Below Me by Lori Cole & Art Hughs.

Song: The Very Thought of You

Overall Impression: “Composed by Ray Noble in the 1930's, The Very Thought Of You established itself into the canon and has been recorded by some of the top singers of the 20th Century. Lori Cole approaches her interpretation with grace, and a full, robust tone. She guides the listener along, never letting attention stray for more than a moment. The orchestration incorporates the full orchestra, but places emphasis on the winds and never lays anything on too thick. This is a smart move, as the full force of an orchestra would surely overpower the gentle subtlety of the lyrics and mood behind the song. Of particular interest are the fine turns of musical phrase from the musicians. A new color makes a statement at every corner and sustains interest throughout the entire tune. After reviewing much of Lori Cole and Companies work, this is becoming a standard feature of these songs. This version of The Very Thought Of You, is a deeply enjoyable listening experience that allows the listener to melt away with the music.”

Strongest Point(s): “The tempo and gentle pacing of Lori Cole's version is very well done. It is on the slower side, but pulls the listener along with a comforting hand. While this may seem trivial to some listeners, it caught my ear right away and made a lasting impression.”

Area(s) of Improvement: None, nicely done. *note* the comments in this section, and the rated boxes below, are not displayed publicly in posted reviews and remain between the reviewer and artist.

Song: They Can't Take That Away From Me

Overall Impression:
”Having reviewed a previous track by talented vocalist Lori Cole, I will say that I very much looked forward to diving into this version of "They Can't Take That Away From Me". An undoubtedly classic tune, the George and Ira Gershwin penned song has seen many great arrangements by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald since its first introduction to the world by Fred Astaire in the 1937 film "Shall We Dance", so I was intrigued to see Lori Cole's take on the timeless classic, and more importantly, how she would make it her own. Bringing her deeply engrossing vocal prowess to the table yet again, Lori and co. have done an absolutely splendid job of capturing the essence of the original whilst ensuring their own individual artistic touches are gracefully implemented, this results in a highly refined and deeply nuanced interpretation of Gershwin's classic that has been superbly arranged, performed, and recorded. What a marvelously authentic listening experience! Excellent!”

Strongest Point(s):
”It goes without saying that the performances are sublime, Lori dazzles yet again with her wonderfully delicate vocal presence that manages to glide so gracefully against the deeply rich musical backdrop that accompanies, and what a musical backing it is. Beautiful sweeping strings are matched with the wonderfully understated nature of the woodwind, all the while the highly expressive timbral qualities provided by the brass are complemented by the soft and tender touch provided by the piano, culminating in a striking display of sonic exuberance that listeners will find thoroughly soothing. Every detail has been brilliantly captured, ensuring both the performances and nuances of the writing have been represented in an as authentic a way as possible.”

Area(s) of Improvement:
”This is an excellent cover, the performances, arrangement, and production are all highly polished, and I really don't see any areas that would benefit from any further tweaking.”

Target Audience Appeal:
Fans of jazz-injected traditional pop will undoubtedly appreciate this very fine cover.

Song: Someone to Watch Over Me

Overall Impression: “Treating listeners to a little Gershwin, Lori Cole and Company have recorded their version of the classic song Someone To Watch Over Me. Showcasing the beauty in simplicity, Lori Cole has opted for a Piano/Vocal performance of this great tune. There is an added pressure with minimal instrumentation, but both performers do their job exquisitely. Lori Cole sings with a beautiful tone and delivers a captivating performance. She gives each word meaning and has a clear delivery. Bobby Schiff maintains a delicate touch and elegant phrasing in his accompaniment. When these two meet, the music begins to blossom. There are moments where time seems to stop and gravity is suspended. This is only one of Lori Cole's recent releases, but listeners will be delighted to find there are many more to come.”

Strongest Point(s): “Lori Cole's singing is by far the strongest feature of this tune. While that is not surprising for a song for piano and voice, it should be noted that she goes beyond simply singing the tune, and really invests herself and takes care of each phrase. “

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of the Classics and Standards are sure to love Lori Cole's performance of Someone To Watch Over Me.

Song: Our Love is Here to Stay

Overall Impression: “Taking on the gorgeous classic Our Love Is Here To Stay, Lori Cole and company delight listeners with a fine orchestral arrangement and beautiful vocal performance. Those familiar with the tune will be happy to find this version does justice to the original and holds nothing back. Lori Cole once again delivers a stellar performance. She commands the song with a robust tone and confident presence. While her voice would likely succeed in any environment, it is with orchestra that it really shines. The colors in her voice blend well with those of the orchestra, and yet she cuts through without sacrificing tone. With the release of Our Love Is Here To Stay, Lori Cole again impresses with their musical insight and delivery.”

Strongest Point(s): “My other reviews have commended Lori Cole's singing as the strongest point of these songs. While she certainly deserves proper commendation in Our Love Is Here To Stay, the fine orchestration and work out of the individual players should be noted. Bobby Schiff has done an excellent job with the orchestra. The saxophone solo is very well played, and the wind-centric arrangement adds a great deal of color to the tune. The bassist walks confidently, without stealing Cole's spotlight.”

Target Audience Appeal: Fans of Gershwin, Cabaret, and Standards will enjoy Our Love Is Here To Stay sung by Lori Cole.

Song: Long Ago & Far Away

Overall Impression: “Seasoned chanteuse Lori Cole revives a Tin Pan Alley favorite, with the release of her cover of Ira Gershwin and Jerome Kern's 1944 classic, "Long Ago & Far Away." Cole gives a passionate and sentimental performance on this nostalgic pop standard, accompanied by a lavishly sophisticated wind and string arrangement with a subtle bounce from a tastefully subdued rhythm section. Intelligently orchestrated and harmonically textured, Lori Cole's "Long Ago & Far Away" should resonate strongly with fans of popular music from the 1940's, as well as anyone who enjoys a proper torch song performed with a high level of skill and great emotional depth.”

Strongest Point(s): “Superb production, great sounding mix. Another excellent choice of a cover song, one of the more musically complex Tin Pan Alley standards. Fantastic arrangement, great colors and textures achieved through voicing and instrumentation. Nice bass walk. Outstanding vocal performance, wonderful "behind the beat" phrasing, strong and confident delivery. Ideal range to show off your alto, which has great character and timbre for this genre in particular. Absolutely a stunning rendition of a terrific song, stellar performance and arrangement. It was a joy to review, great job in all facets.”

Area(s) of Improvement: “Nothing I can really add in this section. Great interpretation of a great tune.”
